Project Description

Carmarthen Provisions Market is the pinnacle of the St. Catherine’s Walk development that has benefited a significant area of West Wales, attracting interest and admiration from local community and visiting tourism alike.

General feedback on the new building is summarized by this quote from the ‘Trip Adviser’ tourist guide website: ‘The new building is superb – light and airy and an excellent showcase for Carmarthen’s fine local produce’

Providing a new market hall, external shops and public space around the historic clock tower, the development has overcome considerable site, local community and logistical challenges to deliver an outstanding contemporary landmark building. Rio Architect’s unique design reinforces the importance of the historic clock tower whilst providing the focus for the £66 million St. Catherine’s Walk regeneration and Carmarthen town centre itself.

Opened in 2010 by HRH The Princess Royal, Carmarthen Provisions Market is a worthy winner of the CLAW Award 2011.

Building Environment

Feedback from the market hall tenants suggested that the previous market hall tended to overheat in the hot summer months and become very cold in the winter. Rio Architect’s response orientates the building to minimise solar gain whilst providing a thermally efficient building envelope and natural ventilation that regulates the building temperature. The building orientation utilises daylight from the north facing facade that reduces the use of lighting installation. Locally sourced Welsh blue pennant sandstone has been installed on the building.
